“We need magic and bliss, and power, myth, and celebration and religion in our lives and music is a good way to encapsulate a lot of it.”

Gathering of the Tribes: The Second Renaissance is our second music and art festival created to bring the local music and art community together from the San Francisco and Oakland psychedelic movement. One thing that sets this festival apart from other West Coast music festivals is that Gathering of Tribes gives new, up and coming local bands an opportunity to showcase their music, in addition to sharing the stage with established acts from the Bay Area and the West Coast.  Every year, Gathering of the Tribes invites local visual artists to showcase their work for bands, which has been a long tradition since the days of the Red Dog Saloon, The Matrix and Avalon Ballroom.  Additionally, independent merchants come together as a single marketplace to sell their goods.

This year, The Midway, Public Works and Pow Magazine are joining forces with The San Francisco Great Society to celebrate San Francisco 1967 where the first Human Be-In first took place at Golden Gate Park, and where the summer of love sprung from the HaightAshbury District to the first Monterey International Pop Music Festival featured the most popular artists of the 1960s. The tribe is coming back October 22nd.

This festival is dedicated to the victims of the Oakland Ghost Ship fire.

Public Works

Public Works is a multifaceted, multipurpose community and event space located in the heart of San Francisco’s Mission District. We think of ourselves as a blank canvas, designed to host any kind of event or happening.

Our Venue consists of two performance and event spaces, multiple full bars, an art gallery, an outdoor patio space, and a workshop, which can be reconfigured for use as a breakout room, conference room, or artists’ green room.

During the day, artists conceive and produce work that will come to light…in the night. As the sun goes down, the electronic and indie music scenes bubble up to fill this new home for the SF Underground. From DJ dance parties and live bands to independent film screenings and performance art, Public Works is a happening, a hangout and always an adventure.
